Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, sentenced to life in prison for killing a sheriff's deputy in 2000, has been transferred into federal custody, the state prison system said.
Al-Amin, the former 1960s militant H. Rap Brown, was convicted in 2002 for fatally shooting a Fulton County sheriff's deputy and wounding another.
Al-Amin was transferred Wednesday from the Georgia State Prison in Reidsville, Georgia Department of Corrections spokeswoman Yolanda Thompson said Thursday morning.
"He is a high-profile inmate and the care and supervision of him is beyond what we provide for our normal inmate population," she said.
Thompson said the transfer was not precipitated by any particular incident. She said department commissioner James Donald, based on staff recommendations, made the decision. She did not know where he will be imprisoned.
"There's been nothing in terms of violence or anything of that nature at all," she said. "There are things we want to do from a precautionary standpoint."
At his trial, Al-Amin's defense team contended that he was not the shooter and was framed by a government conspiracy because of his radical past. Before going to prison he was the imam of the Community Mosque in West End.
