The Port of Harlem
--June 3, 2005
Elaine Brown, former Chairperson and Minister of Defense of the Black Panther Party, is running f or mayor of Brunswick , Georgia . Brunswick is a small town of 17,000 people, 65 miles north of Jacksonville , Florida . More than half of its residents are Black. One in four of all Brunswick families lives in poverty.
Like many cities, Brunswick is surrounded by White wealth. Brunswick is in Glynn County , which is 70 percent White, and only 1 in 10 families lives in poverty. The City of Brunswick is located on the mainland and is home of the Port of Brunswick , which generates 35 billion dollars in revenue says Brown.
"I'm trying to win this seat to create a base of economic power for Brunswick 's majority Black and poor population through redistribution of the massive revenues of the city's powerful port," said Brown. "I intend to be the first Black mayor and the first woman mayor in a city now controlled by a White, wealthy consortium whose current mayor is a lieutenant colonel in the Sons of Confederate Veterans,” she continued.
To the east of Brunswick are the Golden Isles of Georgia: St. Simons Island , Sea Island , Jekyll Island and Little St. Simons Island. It’s where President Bush hosted the G-8 Conference in 2004. “That is what immediately open my eyes to the area,” said the fluent French speaker in an exclusive interview.
Instead of running in the traditional party of Blacks, Brown is running as the Green Party candidate. She continued, “It offers a serious progressive option.”
